Restored Big Twin Sidecar For Sale

Harley-Davidson made a definitive break with the past in 1930, dropping the old F-head motor design on its V-twins for an all-sidevalve lineup.

Its single-cylinder machines had already used sidevalve motors—and a few OHV top ends too—but Harley-Davidson’s first flathead was its unloved Sport Twin of 1920. The new big-twin Model V was announced in August 1929 for the 1930 season, and was a much more robust and heavier machine than the old J Series it replaced. The first year saw plenty of teething troubles, the worst of which was a pronounced case of “the slows” compared to the JD, and especially JDH, models.

A massive engine redesign for 1931 improved top-end power, and a heavier flywheel made for smoother running and a stronger bottom end; soon the big flathead 74 CI models were embraced by the Harley-Davidson faithful. The Model V featured detachable cylinder heads, bigger brakes and fatter tires, a lower seat height, increased ground clearance and interchangeable wheels, even with its sidecar. The VL was Harley-Davidson’s high-compression version, which could be ordered with either coil or magneto ignition.

In 1934, big changes to the chassis included an even stronger frame and forks, an improved oil pump and a more modern “streamline” styling with sweeping tanks and matching fenders. In 1936, the chassis changed yet again, now shared with the new OHV EL Knucklehead and fully recirculating oil system. The sidevalve big twin became the Model U in 1937, with the UL being the high-compression variant which pumped out a little more horsepower. This 1937 Harley-Davidson Model UL 74 CI sidevalve V-twin is beautifully restored and comes complete with a period-correct sidecar, all styled in Harley-Davidson’s mid-1930s Art Deco “streamline” period, featuring the sweeping fenders and a stunning red-and-black paint scheme.
