Great Style by Thousand Helmets

Thousand Helmets, creator of classically designed, innovative bicycle helmets, announced today its new sweatshirt collection inspired by the cult classic film entitled "Breaking Away.”

Thousand Helmets’ sweatshirts are designed with the intention of creating an enthusiasm for riding a bike and sparking excitement for urban exploration. This new sweatshirt collection speaks true to the brand’s mission with its functional, fashionable clothing—while tying back to cycling’s heritage as a whole. Made with materials sourced locally in Los Angeles, these cycling sweatshirts are flush with features that include an iPhone pocket, moisture-wicking fabrics, reflective materials and raglan sleeves for greater range of motion.

The Academy Award winning “Breaking Away,” the sweatshirt line’s inspiration, follows the tale of an enthusiastic young man and his passion for cycling. Every April for the last 70 years, the campus of Indiana University comes to life with excitement as the Little 500, a bicycle race, draws near. Modeled after the famous Indianapolis 500, the race pits 33 relay teams of four racers against each other to see who can complete 200 laps around a track the fastest.

Following the film’s theme and Thousand’s pursuit to produce functional tools for cyclists, the product line includes ‘The Little Five Sweatshirt,’ which references the name of the race and is styled after the Cutters bike jersey, and the ‘Club Pennant Sweatshirt,’ which alludes to the race flags and is styled after the letterman jackets seen in the film.

“I’ve always been fascinated by cycling culture and its heritage—because it’s still so relevant today,” notes Gloria Hwang, co-founder of Thousand. “We wanted to introduce a product that had our DNA while giving a hat tip to the past.”

Thousand is committed to helping curb the impact of bike accidents, promote active and community living, and make a quality product without causing unnecessary harm to the planet. Thousand is proud to be a member of the “1% for the Planet” organization (, where all proceeds go towards environmental causes that help create a healthy planet.
