1936 Matchess Model X By Anthony Godin

Introduced in 1929 the Model X was in production until 1940 with the biggest revision in 1937. The introduction of a shorter fame / wheelbase improved the roadholding and steering and it was rebranded the ‘Sports Tourist’.

The Matchless 990cc V twin engine was also supplied to Brough Superior from 1935 for the SS80, so called as it could reach 80 mph, however the lighter more nimble Model X was also capable speeds up to and exceeding this and the sharp handling made it a legendary ride for motorcycling aficionados and enthusiasts Registered 24th Oct.

1936 as a 1937 model this matching number Model X has had a recent comprehensive restoration that included a full rebuild of the engine. In addition it has received further fettling in our workshop, a rebuild of the front end with new brake shoes and rebuild of the rear wheel bearings. Since then it has been shaken down on many trips and has been several classic rallies in 2023 and has proved a reliable rewarding bike to ride.

It comes with a small history file that includes photos of the the rebuild, an instruction book, a few old MoT’s and an AJS Matchless Owners Club dating certificate. Retaining its original registration number it remains in generally great condition and excellent working order.
